In Puritan times people who wanted to escape from the control of the Church of England began their own fanatical beliefs when they arrived in America. For one thing, if a person was not a church member he was suspected of evil. People then, as they are today, didn't trust anyone who was not a church goer. Back then even a man was killed since he couldn't recite The Lord's Prayer.
