Perhaps it is in the DNA of the city, so to speak. The town and its people over the years have experienced much action as the second oldest city (to St Augustine, Florida) in America. Starting out as a ship-building town it became a pirate cove on the St Marejs River and Atlantic Ocean.
This rough historic town with its historic section now quiet, reserved and peaceful, was burned down in the War of 1812 and again during the Civil War, Some of the cannon balls are still lodged in the few remaining houses of that period. Here are thousands of Revolutionary, War of 1812 and Civil War soldiers' graves, many unmarked along the river at Oak Park.
Now the wonderful park along the river posts signs reading "PROFANITY IS PROHIBITED!" This is also the town where Aaron Burr, vice president fled after killing Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury in a duel. The house where he stayed is on the National, Register. Read all about Burr being exonerated from Treason by Chief Justice John Marshall and the history of the town in a historic novel The Return of Aaron Burr, a true ghost story–www.macdonaldsward.com
