FRANK LOESSER IN 1952 WROTE SONG PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION

In response to the attack on Pearl Harbor a chaplain was asked to say a prayer. He put down his Hebrew Bible, picked up the ship's gatling gun and fired back saying "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition."   This was like Teddy Roosevelt's maxim "Walk softly and carry a big stick."

Then there's "Trust God but keep your powder dry from a poem, "Oliver's Advice" referring to Oliver Cromwell in 1834. 

Helen Keller's optimistic metaphor did not involve any ecclesiatical doom's day deity.  She said, "Keep your face to the sun and you cannot see the shadows, especially your own.
